Georg van Themseke (* around 1470 in Bruges ; † March 1535 there ) was Charles V's ambassador to Henry VIII of England in 1516 and from 1526 to 1527 .

Life

His parents were Monica de Helle and Jean van Themseke. His wife was Jacqueline de Coudenhove. Their children were: Charles, Guillaume, Guislain Guillaume, Isabelle, Jean, Philippe and Ysabelle.

Thameske may have been the cathedral chapter of St. Gundula in Brussels from around 1491, and he also held several offices in the cathedral chapter of Notre Dame in Kortrijk .

Thameske was with Jan Goetbuer († <September 24, 1519) a candidate for the chapter of the Sint-Donaaskerk in Bruges. But the election on May 29, 1499 brought no decision, the Roman Curia annulled the election and appointed Cardinal Antonio Trivulizion to the interim capital Trivulzion resigned on May 5, 1502 in favor of Goetgebuer. Goetbuer remained cathedral capitular until his death in 1519 and was replaced as cathedral capitular on September 24, 1519 by a friend of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Marcus Laurinus.

Thameske had received benefices at the cathedral chapter of the Cathedral of St. Donatian in Bruges in 1505 and stayed frequently in Bruges. The provost office of Kassel and Haarlem was one of his numerous privileges from 1505 to 1530 .

Thameske had ties to the Burgundian court and carried out numerous diplomatic missions from 1508 to 1532. In 1504 he was appointed to the council of the Great Council of Mechelen with Jéróme de Busleyden . In 1531 he represented the nobility in the Council of States.

Erasmus of Rotterdam met Thameske in Brussels in the summer of 1516 at the dinner table of Jean le Sauvage (or Silvagius), Chancelier de Brabant, and reported positively about him.

Shortly afterwards, Thameske went to London as ambassador, where he met Thomas More , who praised him in his utopia for his congeniality, his diplomatic skills and his knowledge of law. It is quite possible that the Thameske was the messenger from More, who was described as a canon by St. Donatians and a letter from More to Pope Hadrian VI. when he traveled to Rome in the spring of 1523 on a diplomatic assignment for Charles V.

On March 8, 1535, his cousin was appointed to the benefice of Bruges, which is why his date of death is assumed to be around this time.
