Lorenzo Crounse (born January 27, 1834 in Sharon , Schoharie County , New York , †  May 13, 1909 in Omaha , Nebraska ) was an American politician and between 1893 and 1895 the ninth governor of the state of Nebraska.

Early years and political advancement

Lorenzo Crounse grew up in New York State and attended local schools there. He financed his subsequent law studies by working as a teacher on the side. After he was admitted to the bar in 1857, he opened a law firm in Fort Plain, New York. During the Civil War he fought in the Union Army until 1862, but had to retire from military service due to an injury in 1862. Two years later he moved to Nebraska, where he also worked as a lawyer.

In 1866, Crounse was elected to the Nebraska Territorial Parliament. He was also a member of the constituent assembly of that state. Between 1867 and 1873 he was a judge on the Supreme Court of his state. From 1873 to 1877 he sat as a member of the US House of Representatives in Washington . He was then from 1879 to 1883 head of the US Treasury Department in Nebraska ( Internal Revenue Collector ). Between 1891 and 1892 he was US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury . As a member of the Republican Party , he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1880 . In November 1892 he was elected the new governor of Nebraska.

Crounse's two-year term began on January 13, 1893. During his reign, new railroad laws were passed and government spending was cut. Impeachment proceedings have been initiated against three members of his administration for some misconduct. Crounse declined to run again in 1894 and therefore left office on January 3, 1895.

After the end of his governorship, Crounse remained politically active. In 1900 he was elected to the Nebraska Senate for a term . Ex-Governor Crounse died on May 13, 1909. He was married to Mary E. Griffiths, with whom he had four children.
