Silas Garber

Silas Garber (born September 21, 1833 in Logan County , Ohio , † January 12, 1905 in Red Cloud , Nebraska) was an American politician and from 1875 to 1879 the fourth governor of the state of Nebraska.

Life

Silas Garber attended public schools in his homeland in Ohio. In 1850 he moved to Clayton , Iowa, where he established himself as a farmer. He took part in the civil war in various units of the Union Army . After the war he moved to California for four years before moving to Webster County , Nebraska. His first public office was that of judge at the probate court there in 1871. A year later he became a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives . In 1873 he was hired by the US Land Administration. Finally, in 1874, he was nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election.

After his safe election victory in November 1874 against the Democrat Albert Tuxbury Garber was able to take up his new office on January 11, 1875. After being re-elected in November 1876, he was able to serve for four years. During this time he promoted immigration to Nebraska. He also supported agriculture, which had suffered badly from drought and a plague of locusts in previous years. A new constitution for Nebraska was also enacted, in which, among other things, the office of lieutenant governor was created.

After the end of his tenure in January 1879 Garber withdrew from political life. He lived in Red Cloud, which he founded. He was buried there after his death on January 12, 1905. He was married twice.
