Kay Auonne Orr (born January 2, 1939 in Burlington , Iowa ) is an American politician . She was governor of the state of Nebraska from 1987 to 1991 .

Life

Kay Orr was born as Kay Auonne Stark. After school she attended the University of Iowa . In 1963 she moved to Lincoln , Nebraska, where she quickly gained a foothold in the Republican Party . She was soon a well-known political figure in Nebraska. Between 1976 and 1988 she was a delegate at all federal party conferences of her party. Between 1981 and 1986 she served as the Treasurer of Nebraska.

In 1986, Kay Orr was elected 37th governor of Nebraska, with 53:47 percent of the vote against the Democrat Helen Boosalis , former mayor of Lincoln. She was the first woman in this office. She was also the first woman to be elected a Republican to governorship. Her term of office passed without any particular incident. In 1990 she was defeated in the gubernatorial elections to the Democrat Ben Nelson .

After her tenure ended, Orr remained politically active. She was a member of a working committee for the US Department of Agriculture and was on the advisory board of President George W. Bush . She is married to Bill Orr, with whom she has two children.
