Dwight W. Burney

Dwight Willard Burney (born January 7, 1892 in Hartington , Cedar County , Nebraska , † March 10, 1987 in Mesa , Arizona ) was an American politician and between 1960 and 1961 the 31st governor of the state of Nebraska.

Life

Dwight Burney attended Hartington High School and later until 1912 the University of South Dakota . He then worked as a farmer and rancher in Hartington. At the same time he was still working as a primary school teacher. Between 1945 and 1957, the Republican was a member of the Nebraska Legislature , whose speaker he temporarily served. In 1956, 1958 and 1960 he was elected vice governor of his state. After the death of acting Governor Ralph G. Brooks on September 9, 1960, Lieutenant Governor Burney fell to his office. He had to end his predecessor's term of office, which ran until January 5, 1961. During his tenure, sales tax was increased in Nebraska. Otherwise, his brief reign was uneventful.

After the end of his governorship, Burney was again lieutenant governor. He held this post until 1965. After that, he returned to his private interests. He died in 1987 in his winter home in Arizona. Dwight Burney was married twice and had four children in total.
