John E. Nelson (politician, 1935)

John E. Nelson (born December 29, 1935 in Geneva , Nebraska ) is an American politician . Between September 2014 and January 2015, he was lieutenant governor of the state of Nebraska.

Career

John Nelson initially studied at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln . After completing a law degree at Creighton University in Omaha and being admitted to the bar, he began working there. From 1957 to 1960 he served in the United States Navy , in whose reserve he remained until 1986. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1970 and 1978 he was a member of the Douglas County Republican District Board ; from 1974 to 1978 he was also a member of the state executive committee of his party. He served in the Nebraska Legislature from 2007 to 2014, serving on the Finance Committee.

After Lieutenant Governor Lavon Heidemann resigned , Nelson was appointed the new Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska by Governor Dave Heineman . He held this office between September 29, 2014 and January 8, 2015. He was Deputy Governor and formal chairman of the Nebraska Legislature. In the 2014 election, John Nelson was not nominated by the new Republican gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts as his running mate for the office of lieutenant governor. That appointment went to Mike Foley , who was elected to this office alongside Ricketts. The two men took up their respective posts in January 2015, while Nelson was leaving office.
