Othman Ali Abbott (born September 19, 1842 in Hatley , Québec , Province Canada , †  June 24, 1935 in Grand Island , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Nebraska.

Career

Around 1850, Othman Abbott came to DeKalb County in Illinois with his parents . He later graduated from Belvidere High School . During the Civil War he served in a cavalry unit from Illinois in the Union Army , in which he rose to first lieutenant. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1867, he began to work in this profession in Grand Island, Nebraska. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1871 and 1875 he took part as a delegate to two constitutional conventions in Nebraska; In 1872 he became a member of the State Senate . He was also a member of the veterans' organization Grand Army of the Republic and the Freemasons .

In 1876 Abbott was elected lieutenant governor of Nebraska alongside Silas Garber . He held this office between 1877 and 1879. He was deputy governor and formal chairman of the state senate. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on June 24, 1935 in Grand Island, where he was also buried.
