Pete Malinverni

Pete Malinverni (born April 16, 1957 in Niagara Falls ) is an American jazz pianist and composer .

Malinverni had classical piano lessons as a child; during high school he played as a church musician and in funk and rock bands. After taking private lessons from jazz musician Ron Corsaro, he worked with musicians such as Don Menza , Joe Romano and Sam Noto . He studied at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam and obtained his master's degree from the State University of New York / Purchase Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano and composition with Anthony Newman and Sophia Rosoff. In 1981 he moved to New York City to work with his own formations, including Dennis Irwin and Leroy Williams , as well as Mel Lewis , Vernel Fournier , Ugonna Okegwo , Todd Coolman and Tom Melito, and in larger ensembles with Tim Hagans , Rich Perry , Joe Magnarelli and Ralph Lalama . Malinverni recorded several ales under his own name for the Reservoir label; he has also taught at New York University , William Paterson University and the Purchase Conservatory. He also wrote liner notes and for Piano Stylist and Record Review magazines. As a composer, he has received several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Meet the Composer Foundation. Since 1993 he has been the musical director of the African-American Devoe Street Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Malinverni was married to the jazz singer Jody Sandhaus (1951–2012). In the field of jazz he was involved in 30 recording sessions between 1987 and 2010. a. with Gary Smulyan . In 2017 he released the album Heaven , which he recorded with Ben Allison and Akira Tana .
