James E. Harris

James Eastman Harris (born May 27, 1840 in Licking County , Ohio , †  September 2, 1923 in San Bernardino County , California ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Nebraska .

Career

At the age of 16, James Harris began teaching as a teacher in Ohio. In the fall of 1860, he enrolled at Bethany College in Virginia . But his studies were ended by the civil war . He later graduated from Eureka College in Illinois . From 1866 he was also active as a clergyman. He also continued his school career. For nine years he directed the Utica Normal Training School for Teachers in Ohio. From 1885 he lived in Nebraska. He was also a pastor in the local town of Auburn . Politically, he was a member of the Populist Party , which then slowly merged with the Democratic Party . In 1892 he became a member of the Nebraska Senate .

In 1896, Harris was elected lieutenant governor of Nebraska alongside Silas A. Holcomb as a joint populist and democratic candidate. He held this office between 1897 and 1899. He was deputy governor and formal chairman of the state senate. He was also president of Lincoln Normal University . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, James Harris did not appear politically. He died in California on September 2, 1923.
