Hibbard H. Shedd

Hibbard Houston Shedd (born January 27, 1847 in Denmark , Lee County , Iowa , †  October 6, 1905 in Ashland , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Nebraska.

Career

Hibbard Shedd was the son of a doctor. Nothing is known about his youth and school education. From 1864, despite his youth, he took part in the civil war as a soldier in the Union Army . From 1871 he lived in Ashland, where he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1875 he took part as a delegate at a constitutional convention in his new home state. Then he became a member and, in 1881, acting chairman of the then State Senate in the Nebraska Legislature .

In 1884 Shedd was elected Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska alongside James W. Dawes . He held this office after a re-election between 1885 and 1889. He was Deputy Governor and formal chairman of the State Senate. From 1887 he served under the new governor John M. Thayer . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, Shedd no longer appeared politically. He died in Ashland on October 6, 1905. With his wife, Katharine Lee Graves, he had six children, including their son George (1877–1937), who made a name for himself as a writer .
