Thomas Jefferson Majors
Thomas Jefferson Majors (born June 25, 1841 in Libertyville , Jefferson County , Iowa , † July 11, 1932 in Peru , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1878 and 1879 he represented the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Thomas Majors attended the public schools in his home country and then the Nebraska State Normal School . In 1860 he moved to Peru, Nebraska, where he started trading. During the civil war he rose from lieutenant to lieutenant colonel in the Union army. Overall, he was in the army between June 1861 and June 1866.
Majors belonged to the Republican Party . In 1866 he became a member of the last territorial governing council and between 1867 and 1869 he was a member of the first legislature of Nebraska . From 1869 to 1872 he worked for the Federal Treasury in the District of Nebraska.
In 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as the second member of the US House of Representatives alongside Frank Welch . At this point, however, Nebraska only had one seat in Congress ; therefore it was not accepted in Washington. After Welch's death, Majors won the due by-elections and was able to move into the House of Representatives on November 5, 1878. There he ended the legislative period that had begun on March 3, 1879. In the elections of 1878 the story of 1876 was repeated from Majors' point of view: He was again elected to the House of Representatives as a second candidate alongside Edward K. Valentine and was again not admitted there for the same reason.
Majors later became director of Citizens Bank in Peru. Between 1890 and 1894 he was Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska. In 1894 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor in his home state. However, he became a member and president of the Nebraska Education Committee.
Thomas Majors died in Peru on July 11, 1932 at the age of 91.
