John Jay McCarthy
John Jay McCarthy (born July 19, 1857 in Stoughton , Dane County , Wisconsin , † March 30, 1943 in Ponca , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the third constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John McCarthy attended his home public schools and the Albion Academy in his home state of Wisconsin. In 1879 he moved to David City , Nebraska. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1884, he began working in his new profession in Emerson . In 1890, 1892, and 1894 he was elected District Attorney for Dixon County . McCarthy became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1898 and 1900 he was a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives .
In 1902, John McCarthy was elected to the US House of Representatives in the Third District of Nebraska. There he replaced the Democrat John Seaton Robinson on March 4, 1903 , whom he had defeated in the election. After a re-election in 1904, McCarthy was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1907. For the elections in 1906 he was no longer nominated by his party. In 1912 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention . Then he withdrew from politics. In the years that followed, up to his death in 1943, he worked as a lawyer in Ponca.
