William Laury Greene

William Laury Greene (born October 3, 1849 in Ireland , Pike County , Indiana , † March 11, 1899 in Omaha , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a child, William Greene moved with his parents to Dubois County , Indiana. There he attended public schools. After finishing school, he first worked as a teacher himself before he began studying law. After his successful exams and his admission to the bar in 1876, he began working in his new profession in Bloomington . In 1883 Greene moved to Kearney , Nebraska, where he also worked as a lawyer. Politically, he became a member of the short-lived Populist Party . In 1893 he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for that party for the US Senate . He was then a judge in the Twelfth Judicial District of Nebraska between 1895 and 1897.

In the congressional election of 1896 , Greene was elected to the US House of Representatives in the sixth district of Nebraska. There he replaced Omer Madison Kem on March 4, 1897 . In the 1898 election , Greene was confirmed in office. The new legislative period began on March 4, 1899, just a few days before Greene's death on March 11. His seat then fell to his party colleague William Neville after the by-election was due . William Greene was buried in Kearney.
