James Laird

James Laird (born June 20, 1849 in Fowlerville , Livingston County , New York , † August 17, 1889 in Hastings , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1889 he represented the second constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his early teens, James Laird moved his parents to Michigan , where the family settled in Hillsdale County . There Laird attended Adrian College . Despite his youth, he served in the Union Army between 1862 and 1865 during the Civil War .

After the war, James Laird studied law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor until 1871 . After his admission to the bar , he began to work in this profession from 1872 in Hastings, Nebraska . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1875 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution of Nebraska.

In the congressional elections of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the then newly created second district of Nebraska. After being confirmed in office in 1884, 1886 and 1888, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress from March 4, 1883 until his death on August 17, 1889. His mandate then fell to Gilbert L. Laws after the by-election was due .
