Tom Osborne

Thomas William "Tom" Osborne (born February 23, 1937 in Hastings , Nebraska ) is an American politician . Between 2001 and 2007 he represented the third constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives . He was also a successful football player and coach.

Career

Tom Osborne attended Hastings High School and then until 1959 Hastings College . He then studied at the University of Nebraska until 1965 . Between 1956 and 1962 he played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers . From 1964 to 1997 he was a successful coach who won the American college championship of the NCAA three times with the team from the University of Nebraska, the Nebraska Cornhuskers . Osborne is a legend in the American football scene to this day and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 ; the following year he received the Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award, named after Jim Thorpe . Between 1960 and 1966 he was also a member of the Nebraska National Guard.

Politically, Osborne became a member of the Republican Party . In the 2000 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives with 83% of the vote in the third district of Nebraska, where he succeeded Bill Barrett on January 3, 2001 . After he was re-elected in the following years, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2007. In 2006 he decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he applied unsuccessfully within his party for the nomination for the post of governor of Nebraska; he was subject to the incumbent Dave Heineman in the Republican primary . Tom Osborne is married to Nancy Osborne. The couple live in Lemoyne .
