George Washington Emery Dorsey

George Washington Emery Dorsey (born January 25, 1842 in Loudoun County , Virginia , † June 12, 1911 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented the third constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1856, George Dorsey and his parents moved to Preston County in what is now West Virginia , which was then part of the state of Virginia. There he attended private schools and the Oak Hill Academy . During the Civil War he fought in the ranks of the Union Army as a lieutenant in an infantry unit from West Virginia. In the course of the war he rose to major. In 1866 Dorsey moved to Nebraska, where he studied law. After being admitted to the bar in 1869, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he got into the banking business.

Dorsey became a member of the Republican Party . He was vice president of the Nebraska Agriculture Committee and chairman of the Republican state. In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the third district of Nebraska, where he replaced Edward K. Valentine on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1891. There he was chairman of the banking and currency committee from 1889 to 1891.

After not being re-elected in 1890, Dorsey withdrew from politics. He dedicated himself to his private business, which now included several mining companies in Nevada and Utah. George Dorsey died in Salt Lake City in June 1911 and was buried in Fremont, Nebraska.
