David Henry Mercer

David Henry Mercer (born July 9, 1857 in Benton County , Iowa , † January 10, 1919 in Omaha , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1903 he represented the second constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a toddler, David Mercer and his parents moved to Adams County , Illinois in 1858 . After the end of the Civil War , the family settled in Brownville, Nebraska. There David attended the public schools. He then studied until 1880 at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln . David Mercer graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a law degree in 1882. After his admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Brownville. There he was also a police judge for a year.

In 1885, Mercer moved to Omaha. There he was politically active for the Republican Party . He became chairman of his party in both Omaha and the neighboring district. In 1896 he was secretary to both the Republicans in Nebraska and the National Republican Congressional Committee . From 1897 to 1898 he was party chairman in his state.

In 1892 David Mercer was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he replaced William A. McKeighan , who was moving to the fifth district on March 4, 1893 . After he was confirmed in office in the following elections, Mercer was able to complete a total of five terms in Congress by March 3, 1903 . There he was chairman of the public real estate committee. In 1902 he lost to Gilbert Monell Hitchcock in the elections . He then stayed in Washington , where he worked as a lawyer. He died on January 10, 1919 in Omaha and was buried there.
