Silas Reynolds Barton

Silas Reynolds Barton (born May 21, 1872 in New London , Henry County , Iowa , † November 7, 1916 in Grand Island , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1873, Silas Barton and his parents moved to Hamilton County in Nebraska. There he attended Aurora High School and Peru State Normal School . After that he worked as a farmer and teacher. Between 1898 and 1901 he was assistant chamberlain in Hamilton County. Between 1901 and 1908 he was a leading member of a no longer existing brotherhood called the "Ancient Order of United Workmen of Nebraska".

Barton was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1909 and 1913 he was head of the State Auditor of Nebraska and at the same time insurance commissioner of this state. He was also a member of the nationwide Association of All State Insurance Commissioners. In 1912 Barton was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fifth district of Nebraska, where he replaced George W. Norris on March 4, 1913 . In Congress , he completed only one legislative period until March 3, 1915. He tried to run again in 1916, but died before the elections.
