Peter D. Hoagland (born November 17, 1941 in Omaha , Nebraska , † October 30, 2007 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 he represented the second constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Hoagland attended Omaha public schools. After Omaha High School he studied at Stanford University in California until 1963 . Between 1963 and 1965 he did his military service in the US Army and then he studied at the law school of Yale University . After his admission to the bar in 1968, he began working in this profession in Washington DC. In 1969 and 1970 he was also assistant to federal judge Oliver Gasch . From 1970 to 1973 he was a public defender in the federal capital.

Politically, Peter Hoagland became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1978 and 1986 he was a member of the Nebraska Legislature . In 1988 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the second district of Nebraska, where he succeeded Hal Daub on January 3, 1989 . His mandate was confirmed in 1990 and 1992. But after losing to Republican Jon Lynn Christensen in the 1994 congressional elections , he had to leave Congress on January 3, 1995 . During his time in Congress, Hoagland was a strong environmental advocate.

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Hoagland worked as a lawyer in a Washington law firm. For the last five years of his life, Hoagland struggled with Parkinson's disease . He died on October 30, 2007 at the age of 65. He and his wife Barbara had five children.
