Frank Brenner Morrison (born May 20, 1905 in Golden , Colorado , † April 19, 2004 in McCook , Nebraska ) was an American politician and between 1961 and 1967 the 32nd governor of the state of Nebraska.

Early years

After elementary school, Frank Morrison attended Kansas State University until 1927 . He then studied law at the University of Nebraska . There he also passed his law exam in 1931. For a short time, Morrison was a teacher before opening a law practice in Stockville . In 1934 he became a Frontier County attorney . Between 1948 and 1970, Morrison ran for a seat in Congress five times without success . Instead, he was nominated in 1960 by the Democratic Party as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election, which he then won with 52:48 percent of the vote against Republican John R. Cooper.

Governor of Nebraska

Morrison's tenure as governor began on January 5, 1961, almost at the same time as John F. Kennedy took office as US President . He was a confidante of Kennedy's as well as of his successor Lyndon B. Johnson . After he was confirmed in his office in 1962 and 1964, he was able to exercise it until January 5, 1967. During this time, the state's budget system was restructured. Nebraska State Income Tax (not to be confused with federal income tax) was introduced. The governor commissioned a study on water protection. It was then that a new pension system was introduced for Nebraska public employees. In the education sector, school television became part of the classroom. A constitutional reform of 1962 extended the term of office of Nebraska governors from two to four years. However, this regulation did not come into force until after the 1966 elections.

Another résumé

After the end of his last term, Morrison worked in India for the Agency for International Development . In 1971 he was a member of a committee that discussed reform of the Nebraska judiciary. Between 1971 and 1974 he practiced law for Douglas County . Then he withdrew into private life. He died in 2004 at the age of almost 99. Frank Morrison was married to Maxine Elizabeth Hepp, with whom he had three children.
