Neue Mühle lock, upper water to Staabe

New Mill is a living space of Koenigs Wusterhausen , a city south-east of Berlin in Brandenburg Dahme-Spreewald . The former manor district was incorporated into the former rural community of Königs Wusterhausen in 1898. The Tiergarten nature reserve , a former royal hunting ground, is located in Neue Mühle . The Neue Mühle lock , which dates back to 1696, is one of the oldest locks on the Dahme waterway (DaWanda) .

Geographical location and forest swimming pool

Neue Mühle is located east of the core town of Königs Wusterhausen. In the north, Niederlehme , in the east Zernsdorf and Senzig and in the south Zeesen - all of Königs Wusterhausen's districts - border on Neue Mühle. The streets from Königs Wusterhausen to Erkner and Friedersdorf run through the village . The postcode is 15711, the telephone area code 03375.

Neue Mühle is located on both sides of the Dahme , which bears the name Staabe over a length of 480 meters in the upper water southeast of the historical lock to the Husarenecke on the Krimnicksee . The demarcation of the place on Krimnicksee, the western part of the Krüpelsee , continues to the southeast . Both parts of the lake are traversed by the Dahme and form bulges of the river. A riverside promenade begins at the lock and runs along the north bank of the Staabe and ends at the Neue Mühle outdoor swimming pool . The pool has a lawn for sunbathing, volleyball court, table tennis, soccer field, water slide, restaurants and sanitary facilities. The bathing area has a separate non-swimmer area and is monitored by lifeguards .

Historical mentions

The first recorded mention of the New Mill, to which the place goes back, comes from the land register of Emperor Charles IV of 1375 as Nuwemol . Nothing is known about the older mill and its location. In 1437 the Codex diplomaticus Brandenburgensis contains the entry: "[...] with Irem Slosse vnd Stat Tupzk and her mohel, called the Nuwemol [...]." (Tupczk = Teupitz ). A document from 1546 mentions the Newe Molle under the rule of Teuptzig . The lap cadastre (tax and duty register ) from 1624 has a new miller and in 1684 the spelling Newe mill can be found in a document . In 1775, Anton Friedrich Büsching used the current spelling Neue Mühle in his description of a journey from Berlin via Potsdam to Rekahn, not far from Brandenburg .

New mill lock

According to legend, the lock goes back to a hunting trip by Frederick I at the end of the 17th century, on which he is said to have been fed by the miller. The miller complained to his electoral guest about the changing water level of the Dahme, which was affecting his operations, and asked for a weir and a lock. Apparently the future king heard the miller's request. In any case, the first lock was built in 1696, the walls of which flank today's boat tow.

In 1868 at the latest, the new lock chamber was built a few meters from the old one. In 2008 it had a usable length of 38.93 meters and a width of 5.33 meters. The lifting height is 1.50 meters. A chain hoist bridge was built across the Dahme between the lock gate and the underwater for the road between Königs Wusterhausen and Zernsdorf or Niederlehme . If larger ships pass the lock, traffic is interrupted and the bascule bridge is raised. Until 1950 the mortise gate was opened with a hand crank. In 2006 a total of 4,106 lock fillings were made. 102 passenger ships, 15,621 small vehicles and 643 fiscal vehicles passed through the lock. There were large seasonal differences in use. The number of people smuggled in March 2007 was around 60, while in the peak month of August it was 3,670. For August this meant that the bridge was raised 118 times a day on average. The boat tow can also be used outside the lock operating hours.

The last mill was dismantled around 1900. In their place there is a country inn. At the head water of the lock is the Yacht Club Neue Mühle with a wood-clad club house. The club area borders on the historic zoo.

Natural space

Main article: Tiergarten (New Mill)

To the south of the Staabe and east of the Krimnicksee, the soldier king Friedrich Wilhelm I , who often stayed in his nearby hunting lodge in Wusterhausen , had a zoo set up in a 900-hectare forest area in 1725 for hunting and to protect the game population. Today the area is a recreation area with oaks up to 270 years old and has been designated as a nature reserve since 1995 under the name Tiergarten . The Neue Mühle hiking trail leads from Königs Wusterhausen over the castle park and the Neue Mühle lock through the zoo and back to Königs Wusterhausen.
