Gerhard Schlimpert

Gerhard Schlimpert (born August 16, 1930 in Leipzig , † December 24, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German name researcher in Slavic studies , university professor and main author of Brandenburg name research.

Life

Schlimpert studied Slavic Studies at the University of Leipzig from 1950 to 1954 , where Reinhold Olesch was one of his teachers. He was fascinated by the problem of Slavic-Germanic relationships in the area of ​​proper names. In 1958 he received his doctorate under Rudolf Fischer with a thesis on Slavic personal names in medieval German sources. In 1972, the dissertation was published in a thoroughly revised and threefold new version, which is considered a standard work.

Since 1966 he worked at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin and was appointed professor in 1987. There he headed the working group for the elaboration of the Brandenburg name book, for which he developed the volumes on Teltow (1972), Barnim (1985) and Jüterbog-Luckenwalde (1991). With regard to place names ( toponymy ), he specialized in questions of water names ( hydronomy ). He succeeded in proving that, in addition to Slavic and German Bach names, an old layer, i.e. Germanic or even Indo-European names, can be expected in this area. He wrote volume 10 (The names of the waters of Brandenburg) as part of the Brandenburg name book, which was completed five years after his death in 1996 by Reinhard E. Fischer .

The International Committee of Name Researchers (ICOS), the National Committee of Slavists in the GDR and the editorial work of the Zeitschrift für Slawistik deserve special mention in its committee work .
