Debra Strobel "Deb" Fischer (born March 1, 1951 in Lincoln , Lancaster County , Nebraska ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of Nebraska in the US Senate since 2013 .

Career

Debra Strobel, her maiden name, studied at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. There she met Bruce Fischer, whom she married in 1972. She left the university without a degree and moved with her husband to Valentine , also in Nebraska, where she took part in running the ranch of her husband's family. In addition to her political activities, she is still active in this branch today. The main owners of the ranch today are three sons of Bruce and Debra Fischer. In 1988 she got her university degree.

Politically, Debra Fischer joined the Republican Party . Between 1990 and 2004 she was a member of the Valentine City High School Committee. She then sat in the Nebraska Legislature between 2005 and 2012 . In 2012 she was elected as her party's candidate to the US Senate, where she succeeded Ben Nelson on January 3, 2013 , who had not run again. She had first surprisingly prevailed in the primary election of her party and then defeated the former Senator and Governor Bob Kerrey in the main election . Fischer took up her mandate on January 3, 2013. Her term of office is six years and ends on January 3, 2019. She is a member of the Armed Forces Committee, the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the Committee on Environment and Public Works, the Indian Committee and the Committee on Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. It is also represented in a total of eleven sub-committees.
