Joseph Hopkins Millard

Joseph Hopkins Millard (born April 20, 1836 in Hamilton , Ontario , † January 13, 1922 in Omaha ) was a banker and from 1901 to 1907 US Senator for the state of Nebraska .

Early years

Joseph Hopkins Millard moved early with his parents to Sabula , Iowa . There he attended school and initially began to work in a shop. At the age of 20 he moved to Omaha and got into the real estate business. In 1864 he moved to Virginia City , Montana , where he opened a bank. Two years later, however, he moved back to Omaha, where he became director of the Omaha National Bank (until 1920). In 1869 he was a co-founder of the Omaha & Northwestern Railroad . In 1872 he was elected mayor of the city. He served on the Union Pacific Railroad Company's board of directors for thirteen years , including six years as a government director.

Political rise

As a Republican , Millard belatedly entered the Senate on March 28, 1901 , after the Republicans in the Nebraska Legislature could not agree on candidates. His term ended on March 3, 1907. He was chairman of the Committee on Inter-Oceanic Canals in the 59th Congress. He was not nominated for re-election.

Old age and death

He subsequently resumed his banking business in Omaha, where he died on January 13, 1922 of complications from heart disease.
