Sammy Kirop Kitwara (born November 26, 1986 in Marakwet ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Life

In 2007 he was third in the Kenyan Championships in the 10,000 meter run . In 2008 he won the Kenyan Police Championships in the 10,000 meter run, but missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing as fifth in the Kenyan elimination race over 10,000 meters . In autumn he won the Dam dead Damloop over 10 English miles and the Singelloop Utrecht . In 2008 he ran a personal best of 15 kilometers and came third in the Montferland Run behind the two Ethiopians Dereje Tesfaye and Betona Sahle Warga .

In 2009 he improved the course record in the World's Best 10K by 18 seconds to 27:26 minutes. Two weeks later he beat Haile Gebrselassie at the CPC Loop The Hague and won in a personal best half marathon time of 59:47 min. In May he improved the 16-year-old course record at the traditional Bay to Breakers running event over 12 km with 33:31 min.

At the Kenyan Championships in June he won over 10,000 meters in 27: 44.46 minutes. and thus qualified for the World Championships in Berlin . In July, however, the Kenyan Athletics Association surprisingly deleted him from the world championship squad. By starting the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta , Kitwara is said to have violated the association's guidelines. In September 2009 Kitwara won the Rotterdam half marathon in a time of 58:58 minutes. This makes him the sixth fastest runner ever over this distance (as of July 2017) and the sixth person in history to cover the half-marathon distance under 59 minutes. At the Half Marathon World Championships in Birmingham , he was tenth.

In 2010 he finished second at the Lisbon Half Marathon , defended his title at Bay to Breakers and came second at Singelloop Utrecht. At the World Half Marathon Championships in Nanning , he won bronze in the individual standings and gold with the Kenyan team. In 2011 he won the World's Best 10K for the second time. At the Philadelphia Half Marathon he finished second in a personal best, just beaten by his compatriot Mathew Kipkoech Kisorio .

In 2012 Kitwara won the 10K road race in San Juan . At the Chicago Marathon , he finished 4th in October. In 2013 he was able to win the 10 kilometers of San Juan again and came third in the Chicago Marathon behind fellow countrymen Dennis Kimetto and Emanuel Mutai . The following year he won over 10 kilometers in Tao Baja / Puerto Rico. He also won the Luanda half marathon. At the Tokyo Marathon he was third and at the Chicago Marathon second behind Eliud Kipchoge and ahead of Dickson Chumba and Kenenisa Bekele .

In 2015 he won again the half marathon in Luanda and the 10 km road run in San Juan. At the London Marathon he finished 6th and was again second at the Chicago Marathon. In 2016 he won the Lisbon half marathon , finished second in the Amsterdam Marathon and won the Taipei International Marathon . The following year he won the Valencia Marathon ahead of Evans Chebet and Deribe Robi Melka .

Sammy Kirop Kitwara is 1.75 m tall and weighs 51 kg. His trainer is the three-time obstacle course world champion and former world record holder Moses Kiptanui . Formerly he was also trained and managed by Volker Wagner .

Doping ban

In early 2020, the Independent Athletes Commission (AIU) of the World Athletics Federation announced that Kitwara, who tested positive for terbutaline at the March 2019 marathon in Seoul , had been suspended for 16 months. The ban is valid until July 16, 2020.
