Bay to Breakers
Bay to Breakers is a people and road run over 12 km in San Francisco . It has been held annually since 1912. The course runs from the San Francisco Bay (engl. Bay ) through the city to the Pacific Ocean , where the breakwater (Engl. Breakers ) to the Ocean Beach bounce.
history
In order to raise the city's morale after the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906 , the first annual Cross-City Race was held on January 1, 1912 , and has continued without interruption since then. The first event was won by the student Robert Jackson Vlught with a time of 44:10 minutes. The name of the running event wasn't changed to Bay to Breakers until 1964.
In 1940 a woman ran with Bobbie Burke for the first time. She had dressed up as a man.
In 1963 the number of participants had dropped to 25. The following year the race was renamed Bay to Breakers . The San Francisco Examiner has sponsored the event since 1966 . In 1971 women were officially admitted to the start.
With 110,000 participants, the event on May 18, 1986 was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest road race. The average participation is currently around 70,000 to 80,000, almost half of which are registered. In 2010 around 32,000 participants were registered.
A large number of participants walk the route in costumes, with body paint or with varying degrees of nudity. Each year a group of participants disguised as salmon moves against the current towards the bay. The less ambitious participants follow one of the 50 or so floats, which are usually loaded with powerful music systems and a DJ (comparable to a love mobile ). Alamo Square and Park Panhandle are also popular meeting places . In addition to the floats, numerous local bands and DJs play along the route and give the event a festive character. In 2012, the regulations banned alcohol consumption and floats.
route
The 12-kilometer run begins in the city center, near The Embarcadero (along the San Francisco Bay ) and runs down Howard Street through the SoMa district . At the height of 9th Street go north to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and from there along Hayes Street up a small slope to Alamo Square . Then we continue on Fell Street along the Panhandle and finally through the entire Golden Gate Park , past the Conservatory of Flowers , to the finish on the Great Highway along Ocean Beach .
