Arturo Barrios

Arturo Barrios ( Arturo Barrios Flores ; born December 12, 1962 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican long-distance runner.

Life

He became known for his world records in the 10,000 meter run (27: 08.23 min on August 18, 1989 in Berlin ) and in the hour run (21,101 m on March 30, 1991 in La Flèche ). He lost the latter after 16 years to Haile Gebrselassie , who brought the record on June 27, 2007 in Ostrava to 21,285 m. He also lost the record set in the meantime in the 20,000-meter track run (56: 55.6 min) on that day to Gebrselassie, who needed 56: 25.98 min.

Barrios was the first runner to cover the half marathon distance (21.0975 m) in less than an hour.

He also holds the Mexican national records over 3000 m (7: 35.71 min on July 10, 1989 in Nice ) and 5000 m (13: 07.79 min on July 14, 1989 in London ) as well as in the 10 km (27 : 41 min on March 1, 1986 in Phoenix ) and 15 km road run (42:36 min on June 29, 1986 in Portland ).

At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 he was fourth over 10,000 m, at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and the 1992 Games in Barcelona fifth over the same distance.

He became a US citizen in 1994 and now lives with his wife Dagny in Boulder, Colorado , where he coaches the US Army's World Class Athlete Program .
