Eino Uusitalo

Eino Oskari Uusitalo (born December 1, 1924 in Soini , † March 19, 2015 in Lehtimäki ) was a Finnish politician and repeatedly Minister of the Interior of his country.

Political career

Uusitalo began his political career in 1955 when he was elected member of the Finnish Parliament . There he represented the Center Party until 1983 . He ran for nomination as his party's presidential candidate in 1956, 1962, 1968 and 1978 without success. But he was subject to Urho Kekkonen , who was president from 1956 to 1981.

From May 28, 1971 to October 29, 1971 he was Minister of the Interior in the cabinet of Ahti Karjalainen . He held the office of Minister of the Interior from September 29, 1976 to February 19, 1982 in the cabinets of Martti Miettunen , Kalevi Sorsa and Mauno Koivisto . Since May 26, 1979 he was also Deputy Prime Minister in Koivisto's cabinet. As such, he was acting Prime Minister from September 11, 1981 to February 19, 1982, when Prime Minister Koivisto represented the incapacitated Kekkonen as President and was finally elected President on January 26, 1982.

Private

Uusitalo had been married to Irma Helena Lehtola since 1947; the couple has four children.
