Marakwet District was one of 18 districts in the Kenyan Rift Valley Province . In 1999, 140,629 people lived in Marakwet. The capital of the district was Kapsowar . The largest city was Kapcherop with 39,328 inhabitants.
The district arose in 1994 from the Elegeyo Marakwet District of 1927, from which the Keiyo District was also formed. As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Elgeyo-Marakwet County .

- Brimin Kiprop Kipruto (* 1985 in Korkitony near Chebiemit), Kenyan obstacle runner. He became Olympic champion in 2008.
