Monroe Leland Hayward
Monroe Leland Hayward (born December 22, 1840 in Willsboro , New York , † December 5, 1899 in Nebraska City , Nebraska ) was an American politician who lived in the period from March 4, 1899 until his death on December 5 Was a US Senator from Nebraska in 1899. The theater and film producer Leland Hayward (1902-1971) was a grandchild of him.
Early years
Born and raised in Willsboro, New York, Monroe Leland Hayward joined the 22nd regiment of the New York Volunteer Associations after the outbreak of the Civil War . He was later transferred to the fifth cavalry regiment and in 1862 he had to end his military career early because of an injury. Back in New York he attended the Fort Edward Collegiate Institute , which he left with a degree in 1866. He then moved to Whitewater in the US state of Wisconsin , where he was admitted to the bar in 1867 after studying law . He then practiced his profession in Nebraska City. On June 14, 1870, he married Jennie A. Pelton in Cold Spring , who bore him three children.
Political rise
Monroe L. Hayward was a member of the Nebraska Constituent Assembly in 1875 and chaired the Republican Congress in the winter of 1878/79. In 1886 he was appointed district judge and also held senior positions on the State Board of Agriculture and the State Agricultural Society . In 1898 he failed when trying to become Republican governor of Nebraska. But in 1899 he succeeded in replacing William Vincent Allen as United States Senator from Nebraska. He did not take office until March 8, instead of the usual March 4, because the Legislative Assembly of Nebraska was unable to agree on a candidate in time.
death
Monroe Leland Hayward died in Nebraska City of complications from a brain injury before he could be officially sworn into office. He left behind his wife and three children.
