Hugh Alfred Butler (born February 28, 1878 in Missouri Valley , † July 1, 1954 in Washington, DC ) was a Republican US Senator from the state of Nebraska .

Life

He left Doane College in Crete in 1900 . First he worked from 1900 to 1908 as a civil engineer for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad . His first stop in politics was as a member of the Curtis City Board from 1908 to 1913 and later to serve on the Omaha Board of Education . Between 1908 and 1940 he worked in flour mills - and in the grain business.

He became a member of the Republican National Committee in 1936 and was a member of the Republican National Committee until the 1940 election to the US Senate. He was re-elected twice, in 1946 and 1952. He served as Chair of the Committee on Public Lands in the 80th United States Congress (1947-1949) and Chair of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs in the 83rd United States Congress. He was a strong opponent of full status as a State for the Territory of Alaska during most of his career in the Senate, but he changed his mind in the last months of his life. He died in office on the night of July 1, 1954 after a stroke he had suffered the day before. He is buried in Omaha in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park .

Nebraska Governor Robert Crosby named Samuel Williams Reynolds as his successor after his death .
