George Smith (politician, 1809)

George Smith (born February 2, 1809 in Ohio , †  July 14, 1881 in Cameron , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Missouri.

Career

The sources on George Smith are very poor. Nothing is known about his life beyond politics. He lived in Missouri before the Civil War , was a supporter of the Union prior to that war and became a member of the Republican Party . During the war he served in the Union Army . He later belonged to the veterans organization Grand Army of the Republic . He also sat in the Missouri House of Representatives . However, the time of his parliamentary activity is not recorded.

In 1864 Smith was elected alongside Thomas Clement Fletcher of Missouri. He held this office between 1865 and 1869. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . This period was marked by the problems of the post-war period and the reintegration of former supporters of the Confederation . George Smith died on July 14, 1881 and was buried in Cameron, Clinton County .
