Ernst-Jürgen Koch

Ernst-Jürgen Koch (* 1923 , † November 2003 on La Palma ) was a German circumnavigator and author .

Life

Koch, son of the Hamburg wine wholesaler Ernst Koch and his wife Elisabeth born. Scheffler, after returning from the war, initially wanted to be a playwright and then a painter. From 1964 to 1967 he sailed with his wife Elga (1928–2014) as the first German couple from 1964 to 1967 once around the world. They undertook this trip with the KAIROS I, a keel cruiser . This was followed by a second big trip (1978–1982) across Ireland , Spain , Madeira , Canary Islands , the Caribbean , Venezuela , USA with the KAIROS II, a ketch . On their third big voyage (1982–1985) they sailed from the east coast of the USA to the Caribbean. Ernst-Jürgen Koch wrote various books about the travels. The slides of Elga Koch's travels have meanwhile been digitized as contemporary documents. In 1985 the couple finally settled on the Canary Island of La Palma .

Ernst-Jürgen Koch later recorded many of his impressions during his years on La Palma from memory in impressive oil paintings and documented them extensively. Very early on, he recognized how environmental degradation is spreading around the world and destroying the unique. The pictures are owned by a foundation on La Palma and are sometimes shown in parts in exhibitions on the Canary Islands (see also bibliography).

Ernst-Jürgen Koch died in November 2003 on La Palma.
