Jim Hood (born May 15, 1962 in New Houlka , Mississippi ) is an American attorney and the 39th Attorney General for Mississippi. The Democratic Party member was first elected in 2003, defeating Republican Scott Newton . He is currently the only Democrat holding office in Mississippi. He announced on October 3, 2018 that he would run for governor of Mississippi in 2019 . He lost that election to Tate Reeves .

Life

Hood grew up in Mississippi and is a fifth generation Mississippian. In 1988 Hood received his JD from the University of Mississippi at Oxford , where he had previously earned his bachelor's degree. As a student, Hood was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Brotherhood .

Career

Prior to his election as Attorney General , Hood served as a clerk on the Mississippi Supreme Court and as a special assistant attorney general. In 1995 he was elected to serve as district attorney in seven northern Mississippi counties; During his eight years in this position, he tried over 100 jury trials. He has personally followed several historical cases, including the trial of Edgar Ray Killen , who was charged in 2005 with manslaughter of three civil rights workers who were found dead in 1964. Jim Hood has served as the Attorney General for the state of Mississippi since 2004. Hood served in Mississippi for a total of 25 years.
