The Leake County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The administrative seat ( County Seat ) is Carthage , which was named after the North African city of Carthage . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

W. Leake

Leake County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after Walter Leake (1762-1825), Senator (1817-1820) and Governor of Mississippi (1822-1825).

Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Leake County had 20,940 people in 7,611 households and 5,563 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer.
