The Leake County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The administrative seat ( County Seat ) is Carthage , which was named after the North African city of Carthage . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

history
Leake County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after Walter Leake (1762-1825), Senator (1817-1820) and Governor of Mississippi (1822-1825).
Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Leake County had 20,940 people in 7,611 households and 5,563 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.14 percent white, 37.42 percent African American, 4.56 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.10 percent of the population.
Of the 7,611 households, 34.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.2 percent were married couples living together, 16.5 percent were single mothers, and 26.9 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent of all households were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.13.
26.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 98.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 94.2 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 27,055 USD , for a family is 32,147 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,367 versus $ 18,307 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,365. About 18.1 percent of families and 23.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
