The county is located in northwest Mississippi and has an area of ​​1832 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Sunflower County was formed on February 15, 1844 from parts of Bolivar County and Washington County. It was named after the Sunflower River that runs here . In the small town of Parchman is the Mississippi State Penitentiary , also called Parchman Farm , which was built in 1901 and is the oldest and largest detention facility in the state of Mississippi.

Five buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 United States Census , Sunflower County had 34,369 people in 9,637 households and 7,314 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 28.88 percent white, 69.86 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian and 0.48 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.28 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.30 percent of the population.

Of the 9,637 households, 38.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.3 percent were married couples living together, 28.4 percent were single mothers, and 24.1 percent were non-families. 21.2 percent of all households were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.50 people.

27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 18.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 9.7 percent were 65 years or older . The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 115.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 120.0 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 24,970 USD , for a family is 29,144 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,208 versus $ 19,145 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,365. About 24.6 percent of families and 30.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
