The county is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, about 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​1160 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Stone County was formed on April 3, 1916 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after the John Marshall Stone (1830-1900), a governor of Mississippi (1876-1882, 1890-1896).

One building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018), the George Austin McHenry House .

As of the 2000 census , Stone County had 13,622 people in 4,747 households and 3,626 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.42 percent white, 19.18 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races.
