The Humphreys County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Belzoni , which was named after Giovanni Battista Belzoni .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Mississippi and is approximately 50 km to the west from Arkansas and Louisiana . Humphreys County covers an area of 1,117 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Humphreys County was formed on March 28, 1918 from parts of Holmes, Sunflower, Washington and Yazoo Counties. It was named after Benjamin G. Humphreys (1808-1882), a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and governor of Mississippi (1865-1868).
One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Jaketown Site archaeological site . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , there were 11,206 people in 3,765 households and 2,695 families in Humphreys County. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 27.17 percent white, 71.51 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.31 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.50 percent of the population.
Of the 3,765 households, 36.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 38.3 percent were married couples living together, 27.7 percent were single mothers, and 28.4 percent were non-families. 24.9 percent of all households were single households and 10.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.54.
32.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.7 percent between 18 and 24, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44, 18.8 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.0 percent were 65 years or older . The average age was 30 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 87.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 78.7 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 20,566 USD , for a family is 23,719 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,948 versus $ 19,201 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,926. About 32.4 percent of families and 38.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
