history

Grenada County was formed on May 9, 1870 from parts of Carroll, Choctaw, Tallahatchie- and Yalobusha Counties. It was named, like the district capital, after the island of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles .

According to the 2000 census , Grenada County had 23,263 people in 8,820 households and 6,297 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.92 percent white, 40.93 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races.
