The Hancock County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Bay Saint Louis , named after Louis IX. , King of France.

The county is located in the extreme south of Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico and borders Louisiana to the west . Hancock County covers an area of ​​1,431 square kilometers, of which 196 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

J. Hancock

Hancock County was formed on December 18, 1812 from parts of the Mobile District. It was named after John Hancock , an American merchant and one of the leaders of the uprising against motherland Britain . He was the third president of the Continental Congress and the first signatory to the American Declaration of Independence and the first governor of Massachusetts .

One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Rocket Propulsion Test Complex . A total of 16 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Hancock County had 42,967 people in 16,897 households and 11,827 families. The population density was 35 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.19 percent white, 6.83 percent African American, 0.60 percent Native American, 0.88 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. The average income of a household amounted to 35,202 USD , for a family is 40,307 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,229 versus $ 22,066 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,748. About 11.2 percent of families and 14.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
