The county is located south of the geographic center of Mississippi and has an area of 1,651 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Smith County was formed on December 3, 1833 from parts of Choctaw Land . It was named after David Smith , a naval officer.
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 3, 2018, the Taylorsville Signal Office and Watkins General Store .

As of the 2000 census , Smith County had 16,182 people in 6,046 households and 4,558 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.11 percent white, 23.11 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.59 percent of the population.
Of the 6,046 households, 35.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, and 24.6 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.13.
27.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.6 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 30,840 USD , for a family is 36,780 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,698 versus $ 20,154 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,752. About 12.9 percent of families and 16.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
