The Franklin County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Meadville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Mississippi, about 50 km from Louisiana to the west and south , and has an area of ​​1,468 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Benjamin Franklin

Franklin County was formed on December 21, 1809 from parts of Adams County. It was named after Benjamin Franklin , a North American publisher , statesman, writer , scientist , inventor , natural philosopher and Freemason who is also considered one of the founding fathers of the United States .

The most important export good was cotton, which was produced with the help of slave labor until the end of the civil war. As part of the Great Migration , many black people emigrated to the north before and after World War II.

In May 1964, two blacks were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan . The bodies of the two, Henry Hezekiah Dee and Charles Eddie Moore, were only discovered in July 1964.

Nobody was charged for it. It wasn't until 2007 that the case was reopened, and James Ford Seale was convicted of kidnapping and manslaughter. In 2010, relatives received an undisclosed amount of compensation from the county.

Five places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Franklin County had 8,448 people in 3,211 households and 2,337 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.80 percent white, 36.27 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.53 percent of the population.

Of the 3,211 households, 34.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.2 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single households and 13.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.13.

27.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 15.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.1 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 24,885 USD , for a family is 31,114 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,676 versus $ 19,567 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,643. About 20.6 percent of families and 24.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
