history
Roxie was founded in 1886 on a piece of farmland that County Supervisor John Q. Graves donated to the cause. In his honor the place was named after his newborn daughter Roxie. In 1890 the place was incorporated.
The founding of Roxies primarily served the establishment of a new transport hub for the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (1882-1946, later merged into the Illinois Central Railroad ), which was the most important local employer besides the woodworking industry. As long as the transportation business flourished, so did Roxie. At that time there were several hotels, shops, a bank, cultural and school facilities as well as various commercial operations (e.g. sawmills , dairy , use of egrenizing machines ).
However, the importance of rail passenger transport declined and in the late 1980s the north-south connection that ran past the site was finally given up, so that only the east-west connection remained. This development also had a negative impact on Roxie, jobs were cut and facilities closed, for example there are no more bank branches in town today.
