The Harrison County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seats are Gulfport , named for its location on the Gulf of Mexico , and Biloxi . It is one of the ten Mississippi counties that have two county governments.

history

WH Harrison

Harrison County was formed on February 5, 1841 from parts of Hancock County and Jackson County. It was named after William Henry Harrison (1773–1841), the ninth President of the United States.

One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the last home of Jefferson Davis , Beauvoir . A total of 40 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Harrison County had 189,601 people in 71,538 households and 48,574 families. The population density was 126 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.15 percent white, 21.09 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 2.60 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 97.5 males.
