National parks and nature reserves in Kenya
In Kenya there are a large number of national parks and nature reserves , which represent an important basis for tourism in the country. At the same time, many tourists in the parks mean protection from poaching.
The national parks are subject to the highest level of protection, then come the National Reserves and finally the Sanctuaries (protected areas). Sanctuaries are often privately owned and complement or expand state protected areas. In Kenya only a few national parks or reserves are completely fenced, such as the Lake Nakuru National Park . There are often demarcations to inhabited areas, such as in Nairobi to the Nairobi National Park or in Voi to the Tsavo National Park . Most parks are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service , reserves are also managed by local administrations, such as the famous Maasai Mara .
Direct cash payments at the entrance gates of the large national parks in Kenya have been abolished. Self-driving visitors must purchase a so-called smart card at the main entrances . The card can also be purchased in Mombasa and Nairobi .
One of the first nature reserves in Kenya was the Southern Reserve, created in 1899 with around 33,000 km².
