Outline map of the state protected area in Namibia

Numerous state national parks as well as state and private nature reserves have been set up in Namibia to protect and preserve the country's still untouched nature. With this measure, one also fulfills a constitutional mandate, because nature conservation enjoys constitutional status in Namibia. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is responsible for the administration and organization of the state nature conservation . In 2013, 138,163.7 km² were under direct state protection. This is almost 16.8 percent of the land area of Namibia. In addition, there are 177,435 square kilometers (about 21.5 percent of the country's area), which are under partial state protection (so-called conservancies ).

Protection status

Namibia differs law only two types of protected areas, the wildlife park ( English "Game Park" ) and the nature reserve ( "Nature Reserve"), which have equal protection status. There is no IUCN categorization . In order to emphasize the special status of individual protected areas, they have the additional national park ("National Park"). There is also the establishment of a since 2009 marine protected area ( "Islands' Marine Protected Area"), since 2012 the landscape protection areas ( "Protected Landscape Conservation Areas").
