The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism ( MEFT ; English Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism ; formerly MET ) is the Environment and Tourism Ministry of Namibia . Since 2020, it has also included forestry from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry .

The ministry was established in 1990 and serves to protect and preserve the country's natural resources . The environmental policy of Namibia focuses on the preservation of biodiversity and biodiversity and overall ecological balance between humans, animals and plants. The ministry (often in cooperation with national and international environmental protection organizations ) has passed numerous laws in Namibia, and Namibia was also the first country to have nature conservation anchored in its constitution.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is located on Robert Mugabe Avenue and the corner of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda St in Windhoek-Central as well as other departments and branches throughout Namibia. The current Environment Minister of Namibia is Pohamba Shifeta , the Deputy Environment Minister is Tommy Nambahu .

Directorates

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism consists of five directorates . Each is headed by a director and a deputy director.

General Administration and Support Services Directorate

The Directorate of Administration & Support Services oversees and coordinates the ministry's activities. This includes the following areas:

  • Advising the administration of the Ministry in the development, application, interpretation, implementation and formulation of relevant political means in accordance with the legislative requirements and national objectives.
  • Provision of administrative assistance such as cost planning, accounting, human resource management and staff training.

Environmental Affairs Directorate

The Directorate of Environmental Affairs is a small department with mostly environmental ministry employees . In order to meet the complex interrelationships of environmental management , the directorate brings together various environmental scientists, environmental planners , social scientists and lawyers . The Environmental Affairs Directorate cooperates in the areas of landscape protection , animal welfare and nature conservation in many cases with development partners and environmental protection organizations, who take on much of the practical or research work, with the Directorate maintaining the coordination of this work. These include, for example, environmental observations such as those in cooperation with the Gobabeb research station or the international amateur observatory on Gamsberg and educational programs such as EduVentures .

Directorate Park Administration and Game Management

The main tasks of the Directorate of Parks & Wildlife Management include:

  • the nature conservation administration :

    • Registration of nature parks in accordance with the legal requirements as well as support in the planning of his nature protection plan
    • Issuance of concessions for the use of natural parks
  • as well as the sustainable development of animal welfare
    • Examination and creation of hunting quotas
    • Examination of game management
    • Issuance of hunting licenses and hunting licenses after passing the aptitude test (here also in cooperation with, for example, the Namibia Professional Hunting Association )
    • Registration of professional organizations and associations in Namibia

Scientific Services Directorate

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism's Directorate of Scientific Services was established in 2000 and manages the Ministry's environmental science affairs. The directorate provides technical information and research in the fields of environmental protection and environmental management. These services are particularly useful for the Ministry's project work.

Tourism Directorate

The task of the Directorate of Tourism is to promote tourism in Namibia as an important branch of the Namibian economy . Namibia is rich in natural resources, which is associated with a particular tourist attraction. The country's tourism policy pursues the creation and maintenance of soft tourism : for the benefit of sustainable development of the country and the preservation of the quality of life of its citizens.

The management also draws up guidelines for gambling in Namibia and collects general statistics in the field of tourism and ecotourism .

Publications

The Ministry maintains an extensive database of maps, statistics, legal texts, scientific publications as well as on completed and ongoing environmental projects.
