The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development ( Murd , English Ministry of Urban and Rural Development ) until March 2015 Ministry of Regional and Local Administration, Housing and Rural Development (English Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development ), the Regional Planning Ministry of Namibia .

The Ministry emerged from the Ministry of Local and Regional Administration and Housing in 2000 and has since included rural development . In 2015 it was renamed.

Erastus Uutoni has been the minister since March 23, 2020 .

Tasks and structure

The ministry mainly performs coordination tasks in the area of decentralization . For this purpose it is divided into five directorates:

  • The Directorate for Regional and Local Administration and Traditional Authorities Coordination (Engl. Local Government and Traditional Authorities Coordination ) installs and oversees an effective local and regional administration and serves as a link between the government and the traditional administrative units and leaders .
  • The tasks of the “Directorate for Housing, Environmental Planning and Technical Services Coordination ” are to ensure adequate housing at local and regional level. In addition, the directorate deals with the planning and implementation of better living conditions for the lowest income groups.
  • The largest directorate is that of the "decentralization coordination ". It deals with the planning, implementation and implementation of a decentralized system of government. The local and regional administrative units are supported by advice, training and other aid projects.
  • Rural development is under the same name "Directorate of Rural Development" (Engl. Rural Development ). The focus is on combating rural poverty by developing work and income situations. In addition, combating or coordinating rural exodus is an important area of responsibility.
  • The internally operating "Directorate for Finance, Human Resource and Administration " deals with the effective administration and allocation of funds as well as personnel development and administration within the ministry.

The directorates are supported by the two overarching areas of "Information Technology" and "Internal Financial Monitoring".
