The Department of Veterans Affairs ( English Ministry of Veterans Affairs ) was from 2006 to March 2015 Namibian ministry for the registration and administration of veterans from the Namibian liberation struggle in charge from 1959 to 1989. From 2015 to 2020 the areas of responsibility were part of the Namibian Vice President and since then of the Ministry of Defense .

history

The ministry was formally established in 2006 to administer Namibia's veterans. The first minister was Ngarikutuke Tjiriange , who took over the duties of the current ministry from 2005 to 2006 as minister without portfolio . From 2006 to 2009 he was Minister of the newly created Veterans Ministry. Nickey Iyambo took over the post in 2010 .

tasks

The Ministry is responsible for the registration, administration and compensation of official liberation fighters, including the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) and its allies.

It currently manages more than 30,000 veterans. These or their families receive a lump sum compensation of N $ 2000 per month as well as a one-off payment of N $ 50,000 if they are fighters from the years 1959 to 1987. Fighters from 1987 to 1989 receive a flat rate of N $ 20,000. In addition, the veterans are supported, among other things, by cheap building loans.

Budget and finance

The Ministry was allocated an amount of N $ 274,538 million in the Namibia budget for the 2010/11 budget year. This was increased by more than 340% to N $ 1.210804 billion in the 2011/12 budget year to compensate for the increasing number of registered veterans.
