Nickey Iyambo

Nickey Iyambo (born May 20, 1936 near Onayena , South West Africa , † May 19, 2019 in Windhoek ) was a Namibian medic and politician ( SWAPO ). From March 21, 2015 to February 8, 2018, he was Vice President of Namibia .

Life

Nickey Iyambo was born in 1936 in what was then Ovamboland in South West Africa. At the age of 26 Iyambo became a member of the South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) and during this time, among other things, headed the local post office. In 1964 he went into exile with other political refugees in Tanzania . Iyambo spent the 1970s at the University of Helsinki studying social and political sciences (1969–1974) and medicine (1974–1980). After graduating, he took on a leading medical position in the SWAPO refugee camp in Cuanza Sul , Angola.

Iyambo became a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia in 1989 and was appointed head of health and social affairs in Nujoma's first government . During this time he built the national primary health care network and a nationwide AIDS awareness campaign . In 1996 he moved to the department for Local and Regional Administration and Housing, previously headed by Libertina Amathila , and in 2002 to the Ministry of Mining and Energy . Iyambo was considered one of the politically most sociable politicians within the party and was a member of the SWAPO Central Committee for a long time. In 2002 he was finally elected to the party's Politburo.

When Pohamba took office in 2005, he took over the management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and at that time was already one of the oldest cabinet members. From 2008 to 2015 he headed the Department of Veterans Affairs . Since then he has been the first Vice President of Namibia .

Iyambo was married with two children and lived in Windhoek until his death on May 19, 2019 .

Iyambo received hero status on May 24, 2019 and was buried on June 1, 2019 in the Heldenacker near Windhoek.
